Pimples

Pimples

A pimple on the vaginal lip (aka the labia) isn’t necessarily something to be concerned about. But vulvar / vaginal pimples aren’t necessarily pimples, either. Here’s what you should know.

Vaginal Pimples

First things first, remember that “vaginal” refers specifically to the vaginal canal, or the internal structure that connects the uterus to the outside world. Thevulva, on the other hand, is the term used to identify all the external genital structures, including the area around the vaginal opening. So vaginal pimples are quite different from a pimple on the vulva. If you notice pimple-like bumpsinsideyour vagina, consult your medical provider.

What Causes a Pimple on the Vulva?

A pimple on the vulva could actually be just that - a pimple. Like anywhere else on your body that grows hair, you can get pimples on your vulva, including your labia (or vaginal lip). Intimate skin is still skin, after all! Typically, pimples are the result of a clogged pore, so wearing tight, sweaty clothing or waiting to shower after a workout can put you at higher risk for seeing external vaginal pimples. That’s why it’s always a good idea to keep a pack of pH-balancing wipes on hand. Pimples on the vulva could also be the result of:

  • Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is quite common, and happens when your skin comes into contact with a material or substance that causes a reaction. Some of the most common causes of contact dermatitis on the vulva include:

  • Soaps & body washes, especially ones that are highly fragranced
  • Menstrual products
  • Laundry detergent
  • Nylon underwear or workout clothes

For dermatitis-prone intimate skin, target symptoms like itching and redness with Rescue Balm, and consider switching to fragrance-free products.

  • Folliculitis

A common but often overlooked intimate skin condition, folliculitisis an infection of the hair follicle caused by a bacterial or yeast imbalance. Anyone can get folliculitis, but there are a few risk factors, including:

  • Shaving/waxing
  • Having curly hair
  • Wearing constrictive clothing

For folliculitis-prone skin, look for yeast-safe cleansers like Microbiome Balancing Cleanser and use Buff & Brighten and Bikini & Body Bump Eraser after shaving/waxing to get rid of bumps.
